Who the Bleep cares about Tarvottis?

WHO THE BLEEP CARES?
Weekly column by Selma Carvalho.

Who the Bleep cares about Tarvottis?

To the humble Tarvotti belongs the Goan Diaspora. Whether it was the dhows he got off from, in the 1800s, wandering into the Port of Zanzibar, perhaps staying on and setting-up the liquor shops that Goans ultimately became famously known for in Zanzibar, or the British India ships he sailed on, to the Ports of Aden, Iran and London, he paved the way for the rest of us Goans to follow. The Tarvotti even set sail for America, as early as 1900, surviving the treacherous trans-Atlantic voyage to land at San Francisco Bay and New York. At the time, even bhatcars in Goa could not afford to travel to these far-off foreign lands. The Tarvotti brought back more that just presents of cured, salt-meat and foreign textiles on his return, he brought back stories that fired our imagination with tales of strange ceremonies in lush virgin Africa, of men who wore white abayas and women who had to cover their faces in Arabia, of bustling ports and thriving cities in London and New York. Two tarvottis sailed with Richard Burton as he set out to explore the Dark Continent and trekked with him into the interiors of Africa, as his cooks. In a very real sense these intrepid tarvottis became our explorers, mapping the world for our Goan collective consciousness.

Yet, back in Goa, the Tarvotti remained just that. Not much dignity was accorded to this man, who made his living from the sea and spent nine months of his life away from his family. He was by and large, uneducated, either a much treasured Cook or Steward onboard British ships. Crew lists of the 1800 and 1900s show that British captains sailed with not less than five to seven Goan crew on each voyage, and almost always the position of First Cook and Second Cook was filled by a Goan. His salary was meagre, between Rs15 to Rs20 (according to a UK 1901 census) per journey. Just enough to support a wife and family, but never quite enough to invest in buying land and thus overcoming his lot in life.

Not until the free-fall of the Indian rupee, did the Tarvotti actually experience an exponential increase in his earnings. Now in the 21st century, when he sails on American cruise lines, he earns in dollars which are a pittance to the ships that employ him but a handsome salary to a Goan, given the dollar versus rupee exchange-rate differential. Despite the tangible improvement in his earnings and lifestyle, children of Tarvottis or Shippies as they are now known, rarely break the socio-economic mould they are cast in. Life at sea is ten to fifteen years at the most, after that there is no security-net to fall back on. Sea-faring becomes a family occupation, and children of shippies are most likely to drop out after primary school and join the ships.

It is a sad commentary that the life of the Tarvotti has never been recorded or paid tribute. This sea-faring, exploring, enterprising, daring, resilient individual lies at the heart of our Goan prosperity and is the repository of our maritime history. It is time we honoured him with a museum.

Goa’s Catholic Church to counsel seamen

Goa’s Catholic Church to counsel seamen
May 28th, 2008 - 11:08 am ICT by admin -
By Frederick Noronha

Panjim, May 28 (IANS) Seafarers ahoy! Goa’s Catholic Church is taking note of this significant section that makes up a chunk of migrants and has set up special counselling services for seamen and their families. “These are to be organised from various points in Goa, from various parishes and institutions,” said an announcement from the Church. The counselling could focus on anything, from personal family problems to health and religious issues.

For the moment, churches at Mapusa in north Goa, Chinchinim, Mormugao and Bom Jesus (around central coastal Goa) will be taking up the challenge.

Goa’s Church says “over the years” it has always been caring for the ‘tarvotti’ (the Konkani word for seafarer), ’shippy’ (the term used to describe someone working on board the ship) or sailor.

“There are some areas in Goa more prominent than others whose husbands and fathers are seafaring workers, for example, the well-known AVC belt of Assolna-Velim-Cuncolim,” said an announcement published in Renewal, the magazine of the Goa Church.

In Tiswadi, central Goa, the village of Santo Estevam is also a place “where almost every family has a tarvotti past and present”.

There are also retreats being held with special masses, for example, on the third Thursday of every month in Sarzora and on the last Tuesday in Chinchimin.

In the port town of Mormugao, the St Francis Xavier parish has been designated a ‘port church’, which caters to the needs of visiting seafarers.

Recently, Archbishop Filipe Neri Ferrao, the head of Goa’s Catholic Church, dedicated a new facility for seafarers in Alto Porvorim, in the compound of the Redemptorist Fathers, called the Next Voyage Fitness Centre.

Seafarers resting at home before their next voyage will be given priority here. Membership is open for one, three, six and 12 monthly periods.

Announcing the launch of the Stella Maris Counselling Services in Goa, the Church also noted that the Apostleship of the Sea is an international Catholic network, now covering 118 countries. It also caters to land-based fishing communities.

These counselling services are being organised “from various points in Goa, from various parishes and institutions”, the Church announced. The Family Service Centre, and Laity Centre of the Archdiocese will play the role of a hub for them, it was announced.

Costa Santan, the life and times af an able-bodied Goan Tarvotti

Costa Santan, the life and times af an able-bodied Goan Tarvotti

I have a theory that if you separate the Goan from the sea, he'll wither away. All of our history ebbs and flows with that vast, undulating expanse of blue water. One does not look at the sea with tired eyes but always with hope and anticipation.

Sometime in the late 1800s, able-bodied Costa Santan, embarked on a career at sea, which at one point had him working on a ship listed as the 'Wartern'. Possibly in his twenties, and through the help of a 'Ghat Sarhang' as they were called in Bombay, he landed a job in the merchant navy.

To his family in Goa, Santan was a 'tarvotti', a term believed to come from the Konkani-Sanskrit word, taranti meaning boat, but to the British that employed him, he would have been a 'lascar'.

I found Santan, at the National Archives in the UK. What makes his journey fascinating is that seamen like him who sailed on ships of the English East India Company, some as early as the sixteen hundreds, were amongst the first Goans in the diaspora overseas. What was life like, for these early tarvottis? Read On

Santan's ship docked at London port. It was winter and he was not keeping well. Weary, perhaps suffering from malaria, cholera, yellow fever, or any number of accidents that likely befell seamen, possibly he made his way to a sailor-town around the docks. Hilton Docker (1809) a medical doctor to the lascars wrote, "The natives of India who come to this country are mostly of bad constitutions. Numbers are landed sick from the ships, where they have been ill."

Some of the original houses still line-up shoulder to shoulder, on either side of narrow alleys criss-crossing through Wapping, Shadwell and Limehouse. Walking through these alleys, Santan, would have watched as Chinese men smoked opium in the dark lodgings known as 'joints', foreign-smelling food hung from the rafters, soliciting prostitutes scoured the streets and lascars, mostly from Bengal, milled about peddling knickknacks to keep body and soul together.

Mortality rates from disease, venereal amongst them, were high. Conditions were so wretched that it caused an outcry in Victorian England. In 1857, the Strangers Home for Asiatic Seamen was built on West India Dock Road, to assist with boarding. Even then, as late as 1920, Health Inspectors condemned the "godown", used by P&O liners to house their sailors while docked.

In a world of perfect racial inequality, Santan was engaged because he cost much less than an English seamen. A 1901 census puts the wages for British seaman between UKP3 to UKP4 pounds per journey, while an Indian might be paid between 15 to 20 rupees, which was just about 14 shillings. (In those times, 20 shillings made a pound).

Onboard, Santan Costa had been a steward attached to the ship's saloon, Topaz. Clifford Pereira, noted British-Goan, Historical Geographer, tells me that "Goans were rarely employed below deck. They were almost always engaged either as cooks or stewards."

English Captains developed a liking for Goan cooks, who had no restrictions for handling pork, beef or fish. Pereira has also uncovered evidence of Goans cooks being paid higher wages than their Indian and African counterparts on East India vessels in the eighteenth century.

In 1957, Captain Baillie of a P&O liner wrote, "I have never failed to appreciate the cleanliness, discipline and comfort of our ships in which the deck hands are Lascars and the stewards mostly Goanese."

But life at sea was hard, and the ship was often a jutting splinter of racial discord amongst crew members. English seamen called Indians, "coolies" and saw them as servile, obsequious and "damned useless in cold weather". To the English sailor, the poorly paid Indian seafarer was a threat to his own livelihood.

Beatings were common on-board ships. A Sebastian Dias who was hired in June 1915 died of a heart-attack just eight months later, while at sea. And a Joaquim Souza, who was engaged on-board the Baron Balfour, in 1914, committed suicide nine months into the voyage.

Despite the inequities, Pereira says, Goans might have enjoyed a fair amount of privilege, perhaps on account of being Christian. An article which appeared on the Port of London Authority (PLA) Monthly of December 1957, had this to say about Goan seamen:

"The Roman Catholic Goanese have an 'altar peak,' with its own small altar, aboard every ship in which they serve. During the voyage. if there is no priest on board, they choose one of their own number to conduct the prayers."

And another paragraph reads:

"The Goans are more clannish and less inclined to shore excursions. When two or three ships that
carry these nationals are in the Port together, a play or a concert may sometimes be produced by the Goans on board one of the vessels."

Michael Fisher writes in Counterflows to Colonialism, of bonds that developed with fellow Indian seafarers, mostly Muslims, "the binding force of the harsh voyage produced strong solidarities with evidence of cooperation in religious ceremonies."

Although religious restrictions largely prevented Hindu Brahmin Goans from embarking on a career at sea, I find a record of a Dinkar Nadkarni, born in 1900, who was employed on-board the SS Rizwani, as medical officer. There were also Konkani-speaking Moslems from Ratnagiri on board British ships. A Jainoo Ebraim, from Ratnagiri set sail on the Worsley Hall, in 1914.

Did Santan return to Goa or did he think of staying on in England and making a new life for himself? We certainly know that many Bengalis and Sikhs stayed on in England, later applying for Peddlers' Certificates which would allow them to peddle whatever they carried from the ships, which at times
included their bedding.

My mother recalls, that wives would sometimes lose their husbands to the sea. A Coutinho C, from the 'Nova Conquesta' who sailed on-board the Okara, drowned in 1914 at the tender age of 20.

Many women were left widowed during World War II; Pereira contends as many as 700 Goa sailors died, but being abandoned by a tarvotti husband was not common. Clifford Pereira, nonetheless, has found records of small bands of Goan tarvottis who settled in the port-towns of England. These became the first Goan immigrants to the UK.

I like to think Santan wanted to return home to Goa, to the loving arms of a wife and family. He might have colluded with a Goan cook on-board and put aside salted and cured meats which he would take as presents for his family. A small token for the lonely lives the sea and separation wrought upon them.

Sadly, we know, Santan Costa died on 5 January, 1915, at the Seamen's Hospital, Greenwich, London.

"Tarv", "Tarvotti", "Agbot", "Tarum"......

Elsewhere I had written earlier but forgot to sign. Hence this repetition. The
Konkani word for ship/boat is "tarum" and the plural form is "tarvam". >From
this I gather the one who works on ships is called a "tarvotti".

___________

Selma Carvalho:
So if possible, what is the word "tarv", is a Portugeuse word absorbed by our
language, or does it have a Konkani origin. Any help appreciated.

___________

Agbot is a Konkani word for a ship that sails in shallow waters eg. Goa to
Bombay, Kerala etc.
Tarvot is a Konkani word for a Liner that sails accross the Oceans.

Reply:
Accepted, but you have not given an alternative explaination to the problem.
Selma is trying to get information for the research she is doing in writing her
book. As for me?
I am doing research in trying to get my PHD from Goanet so that I can type Dr.
before my name for Goanet mail.
I have realised all the BJP Porrikar supporters on Goanet are Doctors, I would
like to be one of them too and then distribute coconuts and fish in the Panjim
market at cost price with Porrikar breathing down my neck, how about that, Now:
How about this:
Tar is a Canoe that we cross the river accross Aldona to Khorjuem etc.
Tarvm or Tarum, - U was not introduced into the
Roman/Latin/Portuguese vocabulary till much later on, 18the century.
Tarvm is a boat 'with sails', that we (I) sailed from Aldona to Panjim.
Tha same Tarvm (but bigger) with sails that sailed accros the Ocean is also
Tarum.
You cannot call the Tarvm or Tarum person TARYO.
Taryo is already taken up by the local chap who owns the TAR contract.
Therefore TARVOTI is the promotion for the person who works on Tarvm.

As far as my knowledge goes the Konkani word for ship is "tarum" which in
plural form is "tarvam". Hence a person working on ships is called a "tarvotti".

TARVOTTI

'Tarvotti' munje (means) Tarvar kaam korpi dadlo. Saath darya poinn korchea
tarvank 'aag-boat' munnon Tarvoti apoithale. P&O Passanger liners like ss
Arcadia, ss Himalaya, etc were huge passanger liners (remember Titanic) that
provided Tarvotti jobs for many Goan and Mangalorean men, who worked for
about 10 months followed by a four to 6 month mostly unpaid vacation, until
their jobs were unionized or something in the late 70s..

So Tarum means large ship (passanger liner, cargo ship or Oil tanker),
Tarvar means on the ship and Tarvotti is a person working on such ship.

There is a building in Bombay called Tarvotti Bhavan, at 203 P D'Mello
Road.

" ST. ANNE'S CLUB OR KUDD IN BOMBAY---OFFSHOOT OF SALIGAO VILLAGE
COMUNIDADE.------II.

SANTA ANNA CLUB BOMBAY ( ESTABLISHED IN 1850).

"Here is a translation of the konkani version on Santa Ana Club handed to
me(Fr. Nascimento Mascarenhas), by Mr.Jose Carneiro, aged 82 years, on
04-08-1992. He completed the article on 02-08-2004. Unfortunately after nine
days he died on 11-08-1992.

The following is the text:

The elders aged over 70 years who hed resided in this Club while they worked
in Bombay, told me the story of this Club. According to them, Santa Anna
Club was established in 1850. However, as it is stated by some others, the
club came into existence around that period or let us say after the
foundation of St. Anne's Chapel( Saligao) in 1843.

Accordingly three or four ward members (capelistas), as cooks and butlers in
profession, thought of staying together and this was the beginning of Santa
Anna Club.

After some time due to lot of employment in the bangalows, they arrived in
Bombay but our brethren had no place to stay. They also thought of bringing
their relatives to employ them in Bombay. The number of the warders began to
increase, therefore it became imperative to have a big house. After much
search they got a big house in Cavel Street and they named it as " SANTA
ANNA CLUB".

When I was 15 years old, my father took me to Bombay to be admitted in a
school and with right he kept in this club (Kudd) in 1926 (Each member of
the club had right to admit his sons as junior members, I believe). This
Club was in Dabul and we were around 25 members. Besides these there were
around 20 others working on ships (tarvotti) who would return after their
voyage. In 1930 this Club was shifted to 'Horta Baixa". After five years
this club was again moved to Dhobitalao in 1936. Now there were 60 members
in this club (30 youth and 30 elders) besides sailors and those who worked
or cooked in private houses and stayed in the Club. The total number was 120
members.

There was a Manager to run the Club. The male boarders or warders
(Capelistas) could reside in this Club with right but if the wife of any
member wanted to reside over there, there was need of a member to stay as
guarantor (fiador) for her.

One of the strict rules was that all the members were to be in by 8 p.m for
the rosary unless they worked nights.

The feast of St. Anne was celebrated with solemnity and pomp, preceded by
novena, with sung rosary of St Anne etc.. The feast mass was celebrated in
the church. On feast day all were treated to a sumptuous feast day "
Festachem Jevonn"( banquet) and a dance was held at night. On the octave of
the feast day, a mass was celebrated in St. Anne's Chapel, Saligao, for the
intentions of the members and it was called " Bomboikaranchem Fest" (Feast
of Bombay members of the Club). If any member of the Club died there was
Death Benefit Fund (Mornnachi Sociedad) of the Club that would take care of
the funeral expenses, to which each member had to subscribe until he
remained member.

Finally in 1952 this Club came down and the members had no place to stay.
They began to dwell in clubs of different villages as Estrangeiros
(Strangers). In 1950, much before this Club collapsed, there was a move to
purchase a house (Club) on ownership basis and to make all the children and
elders its Life Members with Rs.100/- as life membership fee. For this
purpose a Committee was formed. The President being Mr. Assuncao D'Souza,
Mr. Bertha Souza as Secretary and Mr.Jose Carneiro as Treasurer.

The Committee sent a circular to all Saligaokars, those staying in India as
well as abroad like Africa, England, Abadan, Bahrain and other Gulf
Countries. At that time one required 15 to 20 thousand rupees to buy a
house. Money was received from overseas Saligaokars but those who resided
in the club did not contribute much . Hence after one year this idea of
having a house was given up and the money was returned to the donors with an
apology.

The money of the Fund of Santa Ana Club was sent to St. Anne's Chapel,
Saligao, on condition, 'that on the eigth day of the feast of St. Anne, a
mass is to be celebrated for the intentions of the club members'. This mass
is being celebrated till today

SANTA ANA SALIGAO SPORTS' CLUB, BOMBAY (ESTABLISHED IN 1944).

As many youth from Saligao were residing in Santa Ana Club in Bombay they
thought of having Santa Ana Saligao Sports' Club. This Club was registered
under "The Bombay Goan Athletic Association" for LUZITO CUP AND AVE MARIA
CUP, Foot-ball Tournament, to which two teams A & B Santa Ana Sports' Club
were formed. Around 40 goan teams took part in these foot-ball tournaments
and the players were to be from the same village in Goa, residing in
Bombay. This Football League took place on Dobitalao Grounds every
Saturday/Sunday and lots of Bombay Goans attended as spectators for these
Tournaments.

The SS Britannia song (Konkani)

Sections

The entire village of Aldona was in grief over the tragic loss of its
beloved sons, following the sinking of the Britannia. The sadness took shape
in the form of a Konkani song SS Britannia* which was composed a short while
later. The song was sung at different occasions during those years, as
memories of the incident were kept alive.

While the SS Britannia song was largely forgotten as decades passed by, the
song was kept alive by the families of those Britannia sailors of Aldona,
who either survived or perished at sea.

The rare SS Britannia song on this website has been sung by Sheila D'Souza,
daughter-in-law of Britannia survivor, Albino D'Souza.

Britannia survivors at the time. However, evidence now suggests that some
'facts' of the song may not be accurate.)
